History: Icelandic Sheep are the world's oldest purebred sheep on the planet... This very hardy mid-sized breed with a grass based genetics averages ewes at 130-150 lbs. & rams 175-200 lbs.. Conformation is generally short legged & stocky with no wool on their face or legs. For nearly 1200 years they have remained one of the few true multipurpose breeds. Treasured for their fiber, milk & meat - understandably held closely by Iceland as their country's most valued and prized commodity, forbidding any exportation of live animals until the late 1990's.
Breeding Stock: Cherry Creek Farm was poised at the right time & place to take advantage for both acquiring its sheep flock from the original exportation then later in gaining the first semen allowed out of Iceland's finest old sheep farms. As of 2000, Cherry Creek Farm had obtained the first and finest of the truly oldest purebred flocks of Iceland, to represent our flock with names such as - Blaevar, Butur, Biskup, Dropi, Peli, Hunn, Horvi, Serkur and Moli.
Availability & Cost - lambs are weaned September, (our ewe lambs are never bred the first season), so our virgin ewes are available - Sept. through April and range from $600 to $1200, but, with rams it's a different story, as we only offer the finest of the flock (generally earmarked early on) and range from $1200 - $1600 for sale as future breeding stock. eShop
